Second generation in business

Ties and hand-painted scarves signed by Maruška Topalović travel the world. And they all start their journey from the workshop in the family house in Preljina near Čačak. When she started her business two decades ago, she did not think about creating a family business. Son Radenko (23) long ago started to take on some of the responsibilities. He graduated in economics from the College of Business Economics and Entrepreneurship, and has been helping his mother since his high school days. Daughter Milica (22) studies law. The founders themselves are not aware that they will turn their started business into a family business. Until children appear – says Radenko Topalović. This “transfer” from the first to the second generation is not at all easy and in many cases it can be destructive. As our friend Boris Vukić, founder and director of the “Adiges Institute” in Serbia, says: “It’s hard to grow under a big oak and grass.” Heirs are aware that they have an advantage over their peers because they will take over the companies that their parents leave them. But, they say, the responsibility is also great. – Writes “Novosti”
